Promises

She comes from a town near the middle of nowhere

far from the glow of the city lights

where the dreams grow slow, wild, and untamed

and the black bear stalks thru the waterfall night

where they laughed at her and said "girl, why are you so serious?"

"now that your childhood days are gone"

but her heart was filled with an aching sadness

something inside telling her to move on

She makes no promises

She knows what a promise is

we get so tired at times you know it's been no life of bliss

when you live on promises

She headed for the big town straight out of high school

where she was hoping to start a new life

traded slow days in the heart of the country

traded those days for a fast past life

She holds back a scream when facing the madness

that the world throws down in it's cruel ways

sorts thru her dreams, like the clothes in her suitcase

what to give up, and what will stay

She makes no promises

she looks for where the promise is

we get so dry at times you know it all returns to this

when you're left with promises

She comes from a town near the middle of nowhere

far from the glow of the city lights

where the snowflakes fall, building silent walls

and the bobcat stalks thru the frozen night
